StarBooster Designations/Configurations

Designations

Booster stages have specific designations such as StarBooster 5, StarBooster 30, etc.

The number refers to the number of short tons of propellant carried by the booster.

Thus, the designation StarBooster 200 refers to a booster system with 400,000 lbm = 200 short tons of propellants in the Atlas III propulsion module.

Designations such as StarHawkStarCore, and StarLifter refer to specific upper stage or overall launch configurations.

Configurations

Mission requirements and the desire to minimize risk and cost are driving factors in the design of StarBooster. Since 1995, evolutionary changes in design include a switch from a straight wing to a delta wing, repositioning of flyback engines for staging beyond Mach 3, and the adoption of a single vertical tail.

The current, near final, configuration is derived from a small booster design configuration under study by the NASA Langley Research Center. Starcraft acknowledges these NASA study efforts.
